How Do You Know the Quality of Your Extra Virgin Olive Oil?

The quality of your olive oil is important! Low quality or low price extra virgin olive oils may have additives and lack the health benefits you would find in something more pure. How do you know the quality of your olive oil? We’re here to help.

To start, use your sense of smell and taste - if your olive oil has flavors or smells like the below, you should probably toss it:

  • Rancid: stale nuts, putty or crayons

  • Musty: mildew or mushrooms

  • Fusty: smell of anaerobic fermentation, decaying vegetations or mushy brown Kalamata-style olive oil

  • Winey: wine, vinegar or nail polish aromas from aerobic fermentation

Or a simple way to check is look at the harvest date. The best olive oils will have a harvest date marked on the bottle!

Olive oil with a low price tag are often lower quality. This is because they may be blended with other neutral oils, such as canola or grapeseed. These oils may contain additives or chemicals that could irritate the skin or gut microbiome. Even though higher quality EVOO is more expensive, it’s worth the investment for the pure ingredients and reduced risk of gut irritation.

Due Sorelle has evaluated all of our olive oil partners to ensure pure, quality ingredients. If you’re ordering from us, you can rest assured knowing the products you are receiving are good quality and good for you.
